  • Hi, My husband has been laid off since Dec 17 with 9 days prior notice. 1 month before that he tore his bicep & it is only held by small tendon. Large tendon is disconnected. With how crappy workman comp co. are they waited 3 wks before letting him get an mri. Can not be fixed anymore. So he can not go back to trailer repair, lifting, any wrenching. The Nebraska workman comp COURT will allow him to go to school to retrain for another type of work, however all is taking forever. Now he has a broken fibula bone & had to have surgery to rebuild his ankle after an accident. We had full coverage on motorcycle, but I did not know the policy had no medical coverage for the driver. Now we have a big bill coming. Applied for any help we can get to help pay the bills. Having a benefit too. He will not be able to put weight on that ankle for 12 wks. He is sooooooooo ready to get back to work & all just seems to keep snow balling. We need the unemployment extention! He had several surgery’s previously and unemployment only goes back 18 months on income made (not the 8 years he was with the company) So he only gets 188/wk instead of the full amount as his short term disability does not count as income in those 18 months. The unemployment pays 80% of our mortgage. I have been self employed full time house cleaner for 21 years. What I make pays for all other bills. Have no idea where to get any affordable health insurance. The cobra offered even after the Obama thing was 570.00 a month & his work said we would have had to paid full month of Feb 09 to get the cobra policy. That would have been 1300.00. Couldn’t afford the 570 a month how could we afford 1300.00? Well just trying to get by……We need the extention! Not lazy folks! Just unlucky! Thanks for your time Suzette M Shaw Omaha NE.
  • I exhausted all of my benefits 10 weeks ago. I have tried unsuccessfully each day to find employment, my electricity is cut off and my landlord wants his rent in 10 days no exceptions I am a college graduate with an advanced degree, so are both my parents and my spouse we arel all unemployed so I have no resources. this bipartisan bickering has got to end because at the end of the day the American people lose.
  • There isn’t much hope for job recovery so why don’t they pass another extension for people who have exhausted all of their benefits.  All I keep hearing especially from our President and reading, is that there will be no jobs generated until late 2010 or 2011.  This is not expectable by any means.
The President is going to MIT tomorrow to make a speech about renewable energy. While he’s there why doesn’t he ask them if he gave them some stimulus money for research and development projects like renewable energy, stem labs across America, protective full body uniforms for our soldiers, better weapons for our soldiers, Solar power energy for all our house in America, Wind energy. Could they start up companies and start hiring people for research and development for our future. The Labor Department said there was a net loss of 263,000 jobs in the month September, up from a revised loss of 201,000 jobs in August. This report is dismal and disappointing,” said Sung Won Sohn, economics professor at Cal State University Channel Islands. “The ‘green shoots’ in the economy are withering. Technically, the economy may have bottomed, but the job market doesn’t have any hope.

  • i am on this stuff but would rather be working so anyone that says we are lasy wishes to trade places i would be happy to trade and thay can have that easy money except its not that easy and further if anyone wishes to work 3 days which would open up 3 days for us who would desire to get off the unemployment lets do that , now what you say dif story when the shoe is on your foot and why are the heads playing games with us more finacially challenged voters play games with the big money u will get more past the bill and let us get on with our lives and let the economy grow again and stop giving the monet to the banks
  • I think unemployment benefits should be extended because this period of time is unlike any other we have seen in most of our lifetimes. I have been working since I was 15 years old (am now 48), and have NEVER filed for unemployment until March of this year when my construction related job dried up.
Now, there are still no homes being built and other than a little remodeling, the industry is suffering badly. The new homeowner $8000 tax credit only helps get rid of existing inventory, and is not putting people back to work – at least not in our market. Even so, lenders are hesitant to lend money to builders to start building again, so the cycle just continues.
So many people like myself have prided themselves on never taking unemployment – we just went and found another job if we lost ours. But now, there are no jobs to find. Unemployment insurance is the only thing keeping my family afloat right now, and sadly, it may not even do that much longer. What’s the next wave going to be – mass foreclosures and bankruptcies from good people that always paid their bills and now simply just can’t?
If Washington can’t find it in themselves to pass this legislation, then how about coming up with some REAL ideas to get people back to work, like maybe getting manufacturing to return to the U.S.
    Thank you.

  • Thank you for your website Unemployed and Trying. What is happening right now in Congress with regard to this issue is incomprehensible to say the least. Like everyone who has posted on your site, I have done what is asked of me. I diligently look for work, EVERYDAY! Granted, jobs are posted on all search engines, but when 200-300 ppl a day apply for that job, it is increasingly discouraging. I am this close to sitting in the dark and losing access to my computer. I have exhausted my benefits and find it mind blowing that these Senators are arguing over amendment’s with regard to Acorn and Home tax credits. Standing on principle! The irony in that statement is so over the top. I have visited and I’m registered with a state employment agency; I’m told they get 300 walkins a day looking for work. Even telemarketers are loathe to hire. No more principle, please, just pass unemployment extension. I have called Senators on both sides of the aisle, I only hope it does some good, I will continue to do so each and everyday. Thank you again for your site.

  • It’s amazing to me that the elected officials are putting more emphasis on their issues than the public’s issues. I have been unemployed since April and have done everything expected of me. I have searched for jobs, I have contacted the local Job Center for assistance and have enrolled in courses that should improve my ability to land a job. I am 3 weeks away from losing my unemployment and am concerned as to what will happen. Like others in my saturation I have banks, credit card companies and utility companies that expect payments from me. I really don’t think they’ll take an excuse of “I’m waiting for the officials I elected to decide between helping their constituents or themselves” for my delinquency. There are other citizens out there who are in a worse position than I am in, I just hope the officials realize they are working for us, not their parties, and pass the unemployment extension bill.
  • Dear Senators,
I have run out of unemployment funds and still need help. I have done my part as I have secured a job. The drawback is that this job doesn’t start until December 14. As it stands now, I am getting further behind on my bills that were behind since being unemployed. Please, I beg you, to put aside your differences and pass this very important bill. Sincerely, Robert Neal Las Vegas, NV
  • I was in middle management in financial services for 22 years. I was laid off in December 2008. Although there are entry level positions available in financial services, middle management jobs are scarce. I would like to see unemployment extended to allow me more time to continue my job search in financial services.
    Kathleen, Rochester, NY
  • I am a 37 year old, well educated, male from the state of Georgia. As many of you know, the unemployment rate here is above the 10% mark. I am included in this percentile. I was laid off in June of ’08. It is now November of ’09 and still no luck. I lost my house, my car, my truck, my credit cards, my bank line of credit, and many other material things. I have survived on what little bit of unemployment I have received since July ’08. I just learned that my last payment was deposited today on my last benefit extension. I have dealt with many issues the last year and a half. My health has also been affected by this. I have had no insurance since being laid off and have been turned down for public assistance twice by the social services. They determined I make to much money receiving unemployment to qualify. If living on $210.00 per week for 64 weeks=$13,440.00 since July of ’08 is not below the poverty level then, I don’t know what is. I am not asking for a hand out, I am demanding a helping hand. The job market in Georgia is not good. When the local fast food joints are not even hiring we are in dire straits. I have worked since the day I left high school. I have, over the years, worked a few meaning less part time jobs. There are no part time jobs here. I am demanding my government to help me survive. I am not asking for billions like some of the Tarp money was used for, I am asking for my measly little $210.00 a week to feed my family. I have contributed my fair share of payroll taxes and them some. I don’t want a free ride.

Unemployed and Trying Stories; 401k is Gone

November 3, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

We would like to thank you all for your unemployed and trying stories. We encourage you to send us emails with your stories!  Please vote on the Unemployment Benefits Extension poll as well!

  • I have worked all my life, was with my last company for nearly 18 years, laid off due to down sizing in February 2008. I have no savings anymore, 401K is gone, lost my house, getting ready to lose my car. 2 kids and only have food in the refrigerator and roof over our heads thanks to my in-laws. My unemployment benefits ran out 2 months ago; car insurance cancelled because I can’t pay it. Born and raised in Miami FL but can’t get a job here because I don’t speak spanish fluently….how come all the spanish people that can’t speak english fluently can find work!! I was in a store yesterday where NONE of the 3 women working in there could speak a word of ENGLISH!! Ah….another issue altogether. I have always been the breadwinner of my family, I was the one that took care of everything…now I have lost it all…my self-esteem included. I WANT TO WORK!! But I can’t even get hired part-time at the local gas station!! I apply to AT LEAST 5 jobs a week, most of the time more than that, and have only been called to maybe 6 interviews in 21 months. Have had to swallow my pride and apply for food stamps last week and have been informed that it will take at least 45 days for a decision on that. I don’t WANT unemployment benefits, I desparately NEED them at this point. Would much rather have a job, just something to get up for! The only way I have gas for my car is a neighbor giving me gas money to drive her kid to school! Get rid of all the stupid amendments and PASS THIS EXTENSION NOW!!! God knows how long it will take the states to actually start paying the benefits once the extension passes!
  • Wow, I knew that things are bad out there, but I can see that we (my wife and I) are in a lot better shape then most. But if we don’t get this extra money, we two will be in bad straights. Don’t these guys in the Congress understand that we are not dead beat people. I have worked my whole life in construction and when everyone lost their jobs almost two years ago. I went back to school and got retrained as a IT support technician. Because all the indicators said that IT positions were on the rise and that for the next 15 to 20 years you can a least find a job. So I went to school and gained a certificate. But I have applied for hundreds of jobs that I feel that I am qualified to do, but I have had only one job interview in over a year. So what do we do? Move, but where do you go? Sell everything and move in with Mom, no thanks. These Senators and Representatives have a good paying job and all the benefits that go with it. They need to know that there are a lot of good people who are about to fall through the cracks. Are we ready for thousands of homeless people hitting the streets for the first time? All I ask for is a chance to prove myself to a company, any company.
  • I think I can speak for millions of american who have lost there job within the last year, the people who are holding up passing the bill really don’t know what it feels like to be without a steady paycheck and to wonder if from month to month you will be able to pay your bills..People in Washington let’s get with the program and pass this bill quickly. What if the President decide to “Fire” all of you then the urgency would be totally different because you would want some type of security in order to make your monthly obligations, that’s all the millions of american is asking…So please let’s move forward. Blessings,
“No good thing will “God” withhold from them
who walk uprightly in his name..Psalm 84:11

  • Although I am unemployed and have accepted all the extensions up to date and now have no income, I pray that these congress members will do what is best for our country as a whole. I ask God to direct them.
    Thank you
  • I am a single mother with to children. I have been without benefits for to months. I have never been unemployed. I can not find a job this is the worst I have ever seen the recession in my life. I really think that you would have to be in my shoes to feel the pain.  I can’t beleive that it taking so long to pass the HR3548 bill. Republicans, aren’t helping this suititation at all!!!! Thanksgiving & the Holiday’s are around the corner. We can’t even put enough food on the table or gas in the car. This is so sad. The senate should be ashamed…
  • While I sit here and worry about bills getting paid, sick children, insurance not paying up, I feel great comfort in knowing that the people responsible for this mess are still taking millions away from the very people who gave it to them. I would not want a major company CEO or a bailed out bank president to do without a new Benz or a 3rd vacation house. When all the little people are squashed, who is going to take care of these fat cats?

Unemployment and Trying Stories; Ashamed Kentucky Resident

At this point and time, I am ashamed to admit I’m from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. I was born and raised in Lexington, but my own Senator (Mitch McConnell) is one of the Republicans blocking/holding up the unemployment extension. I am a 56 year old male who has worked hard all my life & due to a down sizing, was let go over 18 months ago–I have only had 3 jobs in my life (as I refer to as “dedication”) and NEVER thought I would be in the situation I am @ this point. I have no savings anymore, my 401K is gone….I have NEVER asked the government for a thing (too proud to ask for food stamps), have always paid my taxes, and for all I know, have help pay for other government programs to help those who are in need.

HONEST TRUTH: At this time, I have less than $10 in my pocket, 1/4 tank of gas and spending my entire allotted time @ the library computer looking for a job. I am a very educated man, have had celebrity friends, so I’m not the bum looking for a free ride—I just need temporary help and I know my friends/family members & church are tired of me asking for financial help. It’s been 4 weeks now since I got my last check (and it was only a 1/2 check) and have no money for food or rent. Last months bills were paid by my church.

There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for the GOP to be playing games over our well being. I have to also admit I haven’t voted in the last 3 elections, but I guarantee I won’t forget about Mitch McConnell in the next election—he barely won this past election, but I will dedicate the rest of my free time campaigning against him in the future. Enough of us who don’t forget, can make a difference.

And BTW, I’ve called his office and offered him to send me about $10,000 of his own money so I can survive a while, then I’d think about forgiving him.

Unemployed and Trying Stories

Unemployment Benefits Extension – Election Day!

November 3, 2009 · Posted in Unemployment Benefits Extension · Comment

I’ve been unemployed since June 11, 2007, grateful to have been given Unemployment Insurance for a good part of this two and a half year period – UNHEARD of in years past to get more than 39 weeks. But economic times like THESE, wasn’t heard of EITHER, not since the ’30s!

I’ve received 79 weeks to date ($116 a week, and $25 a week thanks to Obama), and could even end up with a lot MORE. SHOULD I? I would say so, considering the predicament today – the worst economic crises since the Great ’30s Depression! Also, I am one who put in 45 years of work, losing my last full-time job Friday the 13th of May, 1994 at age 54 (2 World Trade Center; guess I was fortunate THAT way!), an age you don’t gain new employment easily – maybe part-time jobs here and there – often two of them at the same time – and 0 health insurance! I had NO health insurance for ELEVEN YEARS, ’til I was 65 and qualified for MEDICARE, which is certainly not the GREATEST healthcare plan – NO dental OR eye coverage (maybe for a CATARACT operation? I WONDER!).

I’m also at an AGE disadvantage for finding a job – OVER 55 by 15 years now – 70 this December 17th, when ‘they’ expect you to take YOUR BEST Social Security benefit. Yet, the Department of Labor expects me to show I’m looking for work. Well, I’M LOOKING, but there isn’t anything – THERE REALLY ISN’T, for someone my age, or EVEN 55! I’m Ready, Willing and Able as ‘they’ say/require to claim weekly benefits, but THOSE tree are fading. WHAT AM I DO DO, LIE on my report? I’d do myself no good. So, I can’t really PUT ANYTHING DOWN, just keep writing letters as I am doing HERE! I intend to send THEM to the Department of Labor every month as my report! I feel I am doing something that way, as THIS IS MY TALENT. I should have been doing it ALL MY LIFE – writing for a living. All I was doing was TYPING FOR OTHERS – Word Processing. And now my fingers are getting clumsy on the keyboard, my Word Processing skills PASSE. I’d never get another job – WHO AM I KIDDING?

But I BADLY NEED MONEY! Try living on Social Security, $13,000 a year! Yet it seems I don’t QUALIFY for any kind of HELP re food stamps or MediCAID, which is BETTER than MediCARE – dental, eye, etc. If Unemployment is OFFERED for all these weeks, then I feel I’m ENTITLED to all, as others in my position are. We’re not talking a typical Recession, just MAYBE the 21st Century version of a DEPRESSION.

‘They’ say the Recession is OVER! What about DEPRESSION? That’s what PEOPLE are still in, FORGET what’s seeming to rally re the ECONOMY. It takes a YEAR OR YEARS for people to recover from an ailing economy, ESPECIALLY THIS one – YEARS! The GREEDY ones who benefit from a recovery will not want to share it – just HOARD! THBIS IS IT!

UP TO NOW, ALL my Unemployment extensions HAVE COME THROUGH RIGHT ON THE HEELS OF THE PREVIOUS ones, income flowing smoothly, taking care of budgeted needs. NOW SUDDENLY, there is a big GAP in continuing Unemployment Extension – this one that comes after Week 79. THIS IS NO TIME to play games with the Unemployed, ESPECIALLY those HARD CORE Unemployed, like ME. But it’s even WORSE for those who have exhausted their savings, HAVE no other income, e.g. Social Security. They probably have foreclosures and EVICTIONS going on, HAVING LONG PASSED (many going homeless), and many ABOUT to! Unemployment continuance might just AVOID all this, or least STALL it all. DON’T ‘THEY’ REALIZE this?

I say – EITHER TELL US NOW – we’ll get no more Unemployment – OR GIVE IT TO US NOW! I certainly hope it will all be RETRO, these now 4 weeks of benefits I’ve certified for since early October. FORECLOSURES, EVICTIONS, LAW SUITS, etc. won’t wait! AND, the ECONOMY will only SHOW this! We’re being LIED to, or WILL be lied to about the Recession being over, IF PEOPLE ARE STILL TO GO ON SUFFERING financially, and because of those uncaring individuals who could PASS THE VOTE, but just choose to LAY BACK, as they have these past four weeks – GOING ON FIVE now!

GET MY MESSAGE TO THE RIGHT PEOPLE, WILL YOU? Does your blog mean anything? MINE doesn’t, don’t even have the right CONNECTIONS!

Tobias Van Buren, nearing 70, living on $13,000 a year – MANY ON ZERO by now! I’m going to DIE soon, but WHAT OF THE LIVING WHO NEED A WAGE, and if NOT a wage, AT LEAST EXTENDED UNEMPLOYMENT UNITL THEY GET a living wage!

Thank you!

Unemployed and Trying Stories; Waiting for an Extension

  • Hi, I am writing in response to your article this morning. I am so glad that there is a large response, and I am ready to add my two cents!
I too am waiting on the extension. I am a college educated, contributing Florida resident. I have lived and worked in West Palm Beach for 30 years. Except for these past 20 months.
I am a divorced mom of two, I am two months late on my rent, my power will be cut off on November 6Th if I don’t pay, I have been home bound and not able to seek employment for 3 weeks because I have no gas for my car. (I actually should not be driving anyway, because my car insurance was cancelled because of no payment….another huge issue). My food stamps will come in on November 5Th, so we can eat. But I will be living in the dark on the 6Th!
I have never lived like this before. Everyday is a lesson in hardship and patience.
I am so thankful that my landlord is also patient, but they need to pay the mortgage with my rent………
Does anyone REALLY understand how this is effecting EVERYONE, not just the unemployed?
Thanks for letting me vent before I lose my internet service.
  • Why has there been no public media attention to this? It is insane the way we allow politions we put in office to stick us in the mud while they Flex their political threats at each other. I don’t have the financial resourses to pay my bills. I have a two year old son who needs everything. I guess i’m just writing out of depresssion of the financial collapse of of my family. I am so stressed with all of the neverending bills and, the seemingly never ending innability to pay them.I really hope and pray some relief, comes to those who I’m sure are worse off than my family is right now. Thank you for giving me one moment to take my mind off my dispair. Gary Huggins.
  • My name is Hank Hovermale and I’m from West Virginia. I worked for nine years in Maryland until our jobs were out-sourced over seas. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not begrudging anyone anything , but could someone please explain to me why every time there is an unemployment extension passed, the people who live or work in a state whose unemployment rate is 8.5% or higher get more extension weeks than those of us who are from or work in a state whose rate is below the 8.5% standard set by who knows? I mean we are all in the same boat as far as our benefits expiring, so why do some people deserve a longer extension than the rest of us? Could someone please explain this situation to me because I’ve contacted my congressional representative about this matter and have not been addressed about it yet.

Unemployed and Trying Stories; State of Panic Sets In

November 3, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

  • Everyone must stop blaming the republicans. Yes, they are holding this up but the democrats are also to blame. Dems should and could have introduced the extension as its own separate bill instead of adding on things like extending the $8,000 first time home buyer tax credit.
Now, the republicans have added their own ammendments which have NOTHING to do with unemployment. ACORN?? Are you kidding? Both sides have failed to see the EMERGENCY of the situation. It is all politicking. Adding on a bunch of legislature that won’t fly on it’s own to a bill that is GREATLY needed for hundreds of thousands of hard working Americans.
Now, it seems likely if it does pass, the hundreds of thousands of Americans that have exhausted their benefits will not see any monies until December. The Senate is off November 11-13 and the whole week of Thanksgiving. And, if the Senate does manage to agree on some or all of the ammendments the House may not. So, January??
  • My benefits run out this week and I am in a state of panic. I also understand, that when it does pass, whenever that happens, that it won’t exactly be retroactive. That is, you won’t get the weeks that have actually passed paid retroactively, but you will get the amount of weeks in total. Example: if it is passed that 20 weeks will be extended, you will get the 20 weeks, but not from the date that your benefits actually run out. It will be effective at that time that it is passed and when it starts up again. I cannot wait long at all since I have been living “behind the 8 ball” already for a long time. I know I am not alone in this. Please don’t take too long in this and pass it ASAP.
  • i am sooo tired of the manipulative double talk i’m hearing from the republican senators over this issue. i’ve voted republican for most of my life, but i guess i wasn’t paying close enough attention. i am now and it is an insult to my intelligence. how gullible do they think i am. well, i guess i have been, but NO MORE. my eyes have been opened by the internet and politicians should take note. americans are intelligent, compassionate, and now better informed. be careful with your tricky deceptions, they will come back to bite you(as in no reelection). this unemployment extension is not a long term entitlement, it is a lifeline and an economic stimulus equal to 1.6 dollars for every dollar put in. i’ve watched the major banks who quickly received multi-billion dollar bailouts plus basically o% fed money which have allowed them huge profits tern around and raise credit card rates from under 10% to 30% in the time provided them by this same senate before the senate enacted so called reforms to “protect” consumers. my message to the senate is simple: quit trying to attach unpassable amendments to this unemployment extension. Quit messing with people’s well being. you are creating millions of angry voters, and as you well know angry people go to the polls….. jim shadgett… informed voter

  • We need to pass this unemployment extension H. R. 3548 bill YESTERDAY because this is the worst recession I’ve ever experienced and I’m almost 40. It’s bad enough in other countries that people don’t have food and people are sleeping on dirt floors. That’s where we’re headed in America if they don’t pass this fourth extension now! Trust me when I tell you, the job market is a catch 22. They won’t hire you if you have upper management experience because you’re overqualified just looking for a “now” job and on the other side of the coin, they only hire the very top person out of 200 applicants if they don’t already have an internal transfer they can hire first. The recession recovery has a long time to go and I’ve been through this before, but not this bad so I now realize. This is a domino effect situation. If you’re not effected now, chances are you will be in some way in the near future. I know people that were completely not effected in 2007 and 2008 and now they’ve let everything go except their mortgage payment and they’re now struggling to save their house even though they stopped paying the other bills and are being sued because they can’t file another extension. Let’s not let the “Titanic” sink again. Too many people sank the first time!
  • I lost my job in the car business on Oct. 2008 and cannot find a new job even with a great resume. No ones even calling me back. Benefits run out Dec.2009 and Im worried what will happen. I never not had a job nor ever much called in sick or took vacations. All I want is a job again so I can feel like a person. Benefits need to be longer so us Americans can have a chance to get back on our feet and get our pride back, without extra benefits more homes and savings will be lost.
    Thank you

  • You in the house and congress get paid and have jobs because of us. However I am one who worked for 40 years in business that was laid off the mortgage industry I have sent more than 700 resumes out with no job after 2 years and no benefits ….I want to work. But there is nothing I rely on unemployment to help my family I would take anything but nothing and you men and women play god with our lives I am sick of all of the stalling we voted for u next time you may be unemployed

UPDATE: We have had an amazing response to this issue! If you would like to write an article to those in Washington as to why YOU think unemployment benefits should be extended please email them to jwojdylo@subprimeblogger.com. If your article is free of profanity and any direct insults we will be more than happy to post it here on Unemployed and Trying so you can send the link to anyone you choose.
