It is now the 18th of November, and Wisconsin shows NO payment being made, despite saying they are starting to pay for last week. May be on the way, but seems STUCK to me. Why not just PAY it out and be done? No, they have to tricle it in as we are dying out here. I wont see ANY of it for a LONG TIME as now all my checks go to pay a friend who payed my utility bill and now I have to also pay interest at 20% since the unemployment is comming in piecemeal. Help they say... hmph! I NEED WORK!!! These thimbles of water is doing little to stave off the blaze of debt racking up while they diddle thumbs.

I think that it's sad the way that things are now, you got so many people out there looking for jobs that are unsuccessful in their work search. Then you have the Department of Labor having you to enroll in these classes to see if you would be egible for a continuation of benefits after you have completely exhausted them. And this program also pays you a $50 stipend a week for bus fare and gas fare to go out with this list of jobs that everyone does'nt gualify for. I just don't understand why it's so hard for them to see that this money is needed as well the jobs that they say are out there. People are running out their minds trying to figure out what's going to happen to them and their families because they no income coming in. I just hope that they make the right decision. God bless us all!

UPDATE ON THE NEW SO CALLED UI EXTENSION
To hear the Democrats tell the tale, the extension of jobless benefits enacted over the weekend will provide those living in high-unemployment states with an additional 20 weeks of insurance.

Well, not quite.

Because the bill was held up for so long in the Senate, an end-of-the-year filing deadline will prevent anyone from accessing the final six weeks of benefits, according to state officials and sources on Capitol Hill. On Friday, President Obama signed into law legislation extending jobless benefits by 14 weeks nationwide, with an additional six weeks for those states where unemployment rates top 8.5 percent. Those benefits kicked in on Sunday. But there’s a glitch. The new law treats the 20-week extension as two separate extensions of 14 weeks and six weeks, with participants required to exhaust the first 14 weeks before applying for the next six. However, the current law keeps a Dec. 31 application deadline, roughly seven weeks from now, making collecting the full 20 weeks impossible.

That’s not all. The emergency unemployment benefits provided beginning in 2008 are also tiered. The filing deadline applies to all tiers. That is, the new extension would effectively grandfather the unemployed into the tier where they sit at the end of December, preventing them from jumping into the next, even if they were eligible.

As a result, some members of Congress are already eying another sweeping unemployment extension, which would both address the deadline glitch and provide additional help — well beyond the six weeks in question — to those unable to find work next year, when jobless rates are expected to hover near double digits.

The Orange County Register first reported on the deadline glitch last week.

In a state like California, where unemployment currently stands above 12 percent, that technicality would prove significant. Loree Levy, spokesperson for California’s Employment Development Department, said Monday that an estimated 92,000 residents had exhausted all of their available unemployment by the end of October, and roughly 285,000 will be eligible for the newly enacted benefits by the end of the year. Whether they can get 20 weeks or only 14, though, depends on whether Congress extends the filing deadline.

Some in Congress are well aware of the problem. The office of Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) said Monday that he’ll be pushing a proposal to provide as much as an additional year’s worth of jobless benefits. The proposal will be wrapped into a package to include other provisions designed to ease Main Street’s pain amid the downturn, including money to subsidize COBRA health benefits, as well as a provision to extend the full federal funding of a traditionally state-federal unemployment insurance program called FedEd, which got full federal funding under the stimulus bill. Without congressional action, states would again have to pick up part of the FedEd tab at the end of 2009.

McDermott doesn’t have an easy task. The pricetag for extending just the unemployment benefits for one year is roughly $80 billion, the McDermott aide said. With deficit spending having topped $1 trillion in the last fiscal year — and with an enormous health reform proposal in the works — the congressional appetite for expensive new proposals is hardly ravenous. Still, with national unemployment at 10.2 percent — and no wave of new jobs on the horizon — even the most ardent small-government conservatives would have a tough time voting against additional relief.

Tracy,

When my water was disconnected, I walked 2 blocks to the outdoor faucet of a public building and filled water jugs. I did this after 5pm when most of the office workers had left because I didn't want to risk being told I could not take the water.

Lack of water is a major health risk, but none of the social service agencies I spoke with had a program to assist individuals who needed water.

On my first visit to a food bank I was turned down because I had not followed their protocol of first applying through a Salvation Army. All I had was a jar of peanut butter at home and I was very hungry and tired after having walked about a quarter mile in 90 degree temps.

That winter (northeast) my gas service was shut off . A neighbor gave me a small space heater. I sectioned off an area of about 6 x 6 in my living room with plastic and plugged in the space heater. I made a bed on the floor in that area. I survived the winter by heating just that little space.

When the water faucet at the public building was shut off for the winter, my very kind neighbor let me fill water jugs from his kitchen tap. I kept the jugs in the heated area of my living room to keep them from freezing (the remainder of the house was ice cold).

In January I started a telecommute job and worked from within that enclosed area. On the coldest days working at my desk wearing coat and gloves. Customers I talked to had no idea - they probably envisioned me sitting at a desk in a nice office . . .

By May, the company stopped doing business in my state, so I was layed off again. Fortunately, I had earned enough to restore the gas and water.

I'm receiving UC extended benefits now and working towards a degree in a new field. I have been placed on a program with the gas company that only requires a payment each month based on my reduced income.

Tracy,

Things will improve, Tracy. I know it is painful because I have been where you are.

One day at a time, girl. Help in the form of UC to pay for living expenses should be available within the next month.

Hello, Im a single mother of 3 children and have been out of work for about 2 years now. Im not lazy I even decided to clean houses to make ends meet. I have put out more applications from the mall down to Mickey D's its strange to me that I have NEVER had a problem finding a job. My benefits ran out in Aug of 09 and its has been a true struggle but I have faith in God and I have not been put out of my home and my ultilties are holding on as well. I could really use the extension as I continue to look for work. Its the little things we take for granted like toiletries and such that we run out so often. I just want to take of my children thats all. Im not out buying the latest and the greatest, my concern is winter boots for my children and decent warm coats as well. I pray that the extension happens REAL quick so myself and others can just take care of the important things like not being homeless or sitting in the dark or freezing to death in out homes and eating. Please lets do this fast. Thank you.
