  • I would like to add my voice to the thousands that are out there that
need an extension of unemployment benefits. I have worked
continuously for 40 years until 2008. I have made money for companies
and agencies that I worked for that in turn contributed to the
unemployment funds. This is in addition to the taxes I paid
personally and the cash flow my efforts helped put into the economy.
I am no different than every other working American, I don’t want a
handout, but I feel that I have done my part and that myself and
millions of others need this help at this time. The economy appears
to be turning around, I desperately want to be a part of that
turnaround. I am feverishly looking for work. In our state the
unemployment office job service lists over a half million registered
out of work individuals and only approximately 12,000 open positions.
Couple that with the fact that I am an over 50 white male and the
numbers are working against me, even though my track record and
experience show that I am a very productive employee.
Congressman, Senators, we need your help. We greatly appreciate your
efforts and understand that the billions in bailouts for banks and
insurance companies were needed to help bolster the economy. But we
need your help too, and the small amount we get per week helps us pay
our utilities and keep our houses.
Please pass the Unemployment Benefits Extension as soon as possible.
I personally will be out on the street in a month.

Struggling Family Needs Help to Keep Heads Above Water

November 4, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

We would like to thank you all for your unemployed and trying stories. We encourage you to send us emails with your stories!  Please vote on the Unemployment Benefits Extension poll as well!

My family is another family struggling to keep our heads above water. My husband actually worked for Maytag for 11 years before Whirlpool closed the doors 3 days before Christmas. Before that he served in the USMC. After he lost his job with Maytag, they paid for him to go back to school. He was drawing unemployment while going back to school to try to better himself and our family. Unfortunately he had to drop out of school to look for work as we couldn’t afford to continue driving my kids and him to school. We have tapped out any and all savings we had built up. He has been without since the first of October. We have both been out applying for job after job and there just isn’t anything out there. At this point I do not know what we will do. We have no money coming in, so come the middle of this month our electricity will be shut off, we wont be able to pay our vehicle insurance, we don’t have home phones, but had a cellphone and that is now turned off. We were behind on our vehicle payment, so we took the last of our money and paid it to the vehicle payments, they called me monday telling me I still owe $16.59. I explained the situation and she wasn’t very understanding, telling me she has to have confirmation from me that we intend to pay it. Well as of this date I am not comfortable lying and telling them a date I will be in to pay it, when I don’t know if & when the bill will finally pass. Even when it does, who knows when we will see the benefits.

We have 3 small children and it appears that they will not be having a Christmas of any sort this year. How is this fair to our children? How is it fair to anyone else & their children. I have found myself so depressed, that I don’t even look people in the eye anymore. I walk with my head hung down. My husband and I are stressed to the point, that its putting a strain on our marriage. For people to insist that people on unemployment benefits are lazy no gooders, that is just not true.

Another thing I have noticed where we live there just isn’t any discussion on this issue on the news at all. I think it needs to be brought up and continued to bring it up until something gets done. There is nothing worse then kicking a person when they are down, and that’s exactly what they are doing to those hundreds of thousands of people who have or are about to exhaust their benefits. I just hope that they get this taken care of before everyone loses everything they have worked years for.

Why Unemployment Benefits Should Be Extended

November 4, 2009 · Posted in Unemployment Benefits Extension · Comment

I have been unemployed for more than one year. As time went on and I wasn’t able to find a job, despite sending tons of resumes and going on interviews (interviewers say there are apprx. 150 applicants for each job). My health has taken a beating (from worry) and I have developed an arrythmia from stress. I am not lazy — I have a master’s degree in mass communication and have worked since I was 16 years old.

I was so happy when I bought my new house. Now all I do is wonder how I will make ends meet and whether/when I will need to foreclose on my house. Being unemployed can ruin your life and everything you have built for yourself. Until you’ve been there, you can’t understand how bad it gets. I’ve known friends who have become suicidal.

I am no longer a Republican because I believe the party is elitist and cannot empathize with the average joe. Take a look at Sen. Thune and today’s blockage of the unemployment extension. He wants to add an amendment to the bill — this is just one of many holdups caused by the Republicans. It would seem they cannot relate to the plight of the unemployed.

My benefits are about to be exhausted. I’m not sure the bill will pass within the week I have left. I’m tired and very discouraged. My Mom used to talk about the Great Depression and I never understood her feelings. Now I know.

Each day the Republicans stall the unemployment extension, more than 200,000 of the unemployed lose their benefits. This is a sad time for the U.S., but the Republicans just don’t get it. They continue to play games with people’s lives.

  • I have been in and out of jobs since I moved here from New York
two years ago. I was a union laborer in local 731. Some part time
work I wasn’t even paid for. There are no unions in Florida and I
believe it is a fatal flaw. Any job offered me here would only pay
less than what I make in unemployment. We need better jobs and better
pay. Until that day comes we need unemployment. I have no power and no
water in my house. I have no decent job oppurtunities on the horizon.
    I hope someone is listening.
    sincerely,
    Unemployed formerly hard working American.
  • I got downsized from IBM in 2004. Last time I had employment was in 2007. I was stuck in a home with elder parents, where my father would issue a bunch of profanity, and close to death threats to my mother. It was hell to be in, combine with my battling depression had me near hopeless.. Because of the extended unemployment, I was able to move out, and into transitional housing. Due to the delays, I am at risk of becoming homeless. I need to money to stay out of where I was and keep job hunting. I also need to be able to be in a place to keep a non-profit going I started, because there was NOTHING professional with non-profits in the area that could help my professionally.
I could use help here and I want to get my career going. I am taking a pounding on the student loan front, and don’t have health coverage either.
  • I am a republican and have back my party financially for the past 45 years. I lost my job in 2008 and having a hard time finding a new one. My unemployment benefits has ran out two month ago and I’m in jeopardy of losing my home. It brother me that my GOP PARTY is holding up the unemployment extension at a time like this, I really can’t understand why they are using us like a pawn tyring to gain some perts while we are stress out, not knowing how we going to find the next dollar to feed our family. Stuff like this make you think of switching parties. GOP get on the ball before you lose the backing of life long REPUBLICANS.

Unemployed and Trying Stories; “Too Small to Care?”

November 3, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

We would like to thank you all for your unemployed and trying stories. We encourage you to send us emails with your stories!  Please vote on the Unemployment Benefits Extension poll as well!

  • I have been unemployed for over a year now, and my unemployment benefits expired back in September. Although I have good chances to obtain a full time position, it won’t happen until January next year. Without an income, it is even difficult to buy a jacket to go to the many interviews I have been attending. An unemployment extension would be most welcome to help me breach the next couple of months, when, if everything goes O.K., I will (at last!) have a full time job.
Unemployed people like myself, are not lazy opportunists trying to work the system around. In my case, I have an education, and all I am asking is a few more weeks of unemployment benefits. It is an insignificant amount, compared to the bail-outs the government gave to the banks who “are too big to fail”. Is the Republican Party thinking that we, common people, are “too small to care?”
  • I’m 61 yrs. old. I lost my job, lost my health coverage and lost my unemployment benefits. My house was taken 7months ago. I now live in a small apt. but the money for the rent came from my UC checks. I am now behind 2 months on my rent and have till Nov.15th to pay or I will be evicted. Best part is I don’t even care anymore. I have not taken my heart medicine in 3 months because I can’t afford it. My plan is to commit a non violent crime and get sent to prison where I will at least get some food and medication that I desparetly need. I have no pride left and nothing else to lose. But it sure is nice to know that the Republicans are looking out for our country and our citizens.
  • I don’t have a lot to say but this “Noone seems to care about the people that vote”. CEO’s get millions in bonuses. Senators make 100′s of thousands of dollars a year but everyone forgot what this country was supposedly built upon.
Let me know when someone remembers where we all came from. I will survive no matter what but what ever happened to that everyone being equal thing? Someone let me know the answer to that one…….Thank You

Unemployed and Trying Stories; Economic Stress is Hard to Handle

November 3, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

We would like to thank you all for your unemployed and trying stories. We encourage you to send us emails with your stories!  Please vote on the Unemployment Benefits Extension poll as well!

  • I have strong feelings concerning the proposed unemployment benefit extension. I am one of the thousands involved in layoffs in the past year, (2009). And yes, my benefits are coming to an end soon. As of yet the employment situation has not changed much. Sure there are more employers beginning to rehire but many more are still on the sidelines just watching the progression of the economy. My career is in the automotive sector, but anticipate it will never be as it once was.
As the last thirty years passed more and more manufacturing activity in the United States has passed off shore never to return. Which leaves us as a country with service industries and medical industries as our GNP! Well, all is good until we can no longer buy our fast food and medical care because very few have jobs and even fewer and fewer people can afford the ridicules cost of medical coverage! Where will we find ourselves then?
Where as a nation are we headed? I think to mass poverty which would make the last depression look like a walk in the park. At least during the last depression the world needed items manufactured in the “USA”. Now during this depression no one needs “made in the USA”.
To say the very very least we as a nation are headed for deep unrecoverable trouble.
Instead of the National government throwing money at the issue why not throw people at the problem and get people back to work. What ever happened to the governmental suggestion of purposing a tax incentive to employers in creating positions? That may be a good start in restoring our work force and we might just be able to begin restoring some of the broken down infrastructure.
So yes, I do hope for and extension but I also look forward to a job, and at this moment any job will do!
    Sincerely,
    Disillusioned American citizen
  • I myself am apart of the 185,000 unemployed American workers today,
It’s just so frustrating to continually try to seek employment in or slowing economy when there are no job openings. Countless amount of illegal imigrants with jobs and benifits, while the once hard working americans are left without jobs, most individuals lost there health coverage, and are stuck with a lack of resources.
I’m a father of three and it hurts me more that I can’t provide for them as I once could, maybe if the GOP would take it into consideration that more and more Americans are falling into a serious DEPRESSION & not only are we suffering our children are suffering!
  • I have been unemployed since March of 2008. I lived in another state when I lost my job due to economic stress.. that’s the reason they told me when they laid me off… Since then I sold ALL my belongings and moved back home to another state. I have been all over the internet looking for jobs, I buy every newspaper looking for work, I applied at several temp agencies seeking work without success.. so I am NOT one of those “lazy” people that do not try to find work. I can’t express the importance of passing this extension not just for my sake, but for the sake of hundreds of thousands of other people like me and worse, trying to feed their children and keep their homes.. for god’s sake, what is this pathetic world coming too? While congress sits back and stalls, there are people losing their lives, this is very unfair in an extremely challanged economy! This must be passed!

Subprime Mortgage Crisis Ruined It All; Unemployment Benefits Needed

November 3, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

We would like to thank you all for your unemployed and trying stories. We encourage you to send us emails with your stories!  Please vote on the Unemployment Benefits Extension poll as well!

I have worked all my life and was often working two jobs during over 30
years in the workforce. I lost a long term job in the Sub-prime
mortgage industry in 2007. Later that year, the day before I was to
start a new job, I was hit by an uninsured drunk driver while
crossing the street in from of my home. While I recovered, my father
took deathly ill and I packed up my cat and was his full-time hospice
nurse for several months until he died in 2008. Then I returned back to
southern California and have since spent 50+ hours
per week every week for 18 months looking for work. ANYTHING even
minimum wage jobs! SOMETHING, but I guess there is not much call for a
50+ year old who is not bilingual and no college degree anywhere within
a 50 mile radius of where I live.

My unemployment ran out in August 2009. I am still looking for work
but I cannot keep up my modest rent on no income and may be homeless by
December. This terrifies me. I do not know why these rich and often
under worked senators cannot get this bill DONE NOW.
I may not have the gas money very much longer to even get to an
interview if I continue to eat. Even if I got a Job tomorrow, I doubt I
would have enough gas to commute back and fourth to work until my first
paycheck. And again that is if I got a job tomorrow. I haven’t even
been called for an interview in 6 weeks time.

There has been precious little media coverage of this serious issue.
This is a major crisis and seems all the media cares about is a
healthcare bill that won’t help anyone for 4 years, Jon & Kate and some
hoaxer who sent up a balloon, What do we need to do to get the media to
help pressure these rich senate folks to help us out???? Even though
this bill has been held up for over 6 weeks by these stubborn senate
jerks, they refuse to make the extension retro back to when the benefits
last expired. THIS IS INSANE! By the time many of us see a dime it
will be too late to help us. I’d like to see the Senators go 3 months
without pay after they have had to live on only $1200.00 PER MONTH for
18 months and see how they could keep from becoming homeless. Maybe if
they could walk a while in our shoes they would have some sense of
URGENCY in passing this bill!

Thank you for listening

Unemployed and Trying Stories; Lack of Jobs Available

November 3, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

We would like to thank you all for your unemployed and trying stories. We encourage you to send us emails with your stories!  Please vote on the Unemployment Benefits Extension poll as well!

  • I know that all of us who are on unemployment would really rather not be. Unfortunately due to the lack of jobs we are forced to be. My story as well as a lot of Californian’s is that I am unemployed. My husband is a state worker who is working but loses three days a month of pay due to the furlough California has implemented. This makes it even harder on people who are trying to budget and pay their bills let alone anything else. We also have 4 children (2 of them we pay child support for). When my unemployment was coming in it covered a little bit of what my husband was having cut from his salary; but now it has expired and we are left with very little to support our family. So as you can see not only are we loosing money from me being unable to find a job, but also loosing money from my husband being furloughed for three days a month. You might think that my husband getting 3 days off a month is a good thing the only problem with that is that because of his job he cannot take off the time like other state workers. He is working 3 days a month without pay.
So please get the extension passed so that families like mine in California can start getting a little ahead of the game. We would really appreciate it. Thank you.
  • I am a 45 year old man and a US veteran in the USMC. I have been out of work since 2-08 and I have gotten the UI benefits but according to my local office in Griffin Georgia I have no more money available for me. My wife Tina can not work due to her being over weight and having aurthitus in both of her legs. Because I wanted my wife to be a stay at home mom for our 2 (now grown) daughters she is punished for not having put into SSI, so I am sole support of my family and we both have monthly medications that we have to take and I am in need of the extension that President Obama has said would be taking place. If there is any information out there that will help me on this please email me at LazyJsGifts@AOL.com thank you for your time.
  • Hello,
My question is my benefits run out the 2nd week of january so I need to know if this latest bill that is going to be passed would include me I was laid off in Feburary and could not get the 3rd tier extension because mine exhausted the 2nd week of january so I am really thinking that is not fair other people have gotten over 70 weeks and right now I could only get 46 so if anyone knows the answer to this I would really appreciate it!!!
    Thank you!!!

Unemployed and Trying Stories; Laid Off and Need Help!

  • Hi, My husband has been laid off since Dec 17 with 9 days prior notice. 1 month before that he tore his bicep & it is only held by small tendon. Large tendon is disconnected. With how crappy workman comp co. are they waited 3 wks before letting him get an mri. Can not be fixed anymore. So he can not go back to trailer repair, lifting, any wrenching. The Nebraska workman comp COURT will allow him to go to school to retrain for another type of work, however all is taking forever. Now he has a broken fibula bone & had to have surgery to rebuild his ankle after an accident. We had full coverage on motorcycle, but I did not know the policy had no medical coverage for the driver. Now we have a big bill coming. Applied for any help we can get to help pay the bills. Having a benefit too. He will not be able to put weight on that ankle for 12 wks. He is sooooooooo ready to get back to work & all just seems to keep snow balling. We need the unemployment extention! He had several surgery’s previously and unemployment only goes back 18 months on income made (not the 8 years he was with the company) So he only gets 188/wk instead of the full amount as his short term disability does not count as income in those 18 months. The unemployment pays 80% of our mortgage. I have been self employed full time house cleaner for 21 years. What I make pays for all other bills. Have no idea where to get any affordable health insurance. The cobra offered even after the Obama thing was 570.00 a month & his work said we would have had to paid full month of Feb 09 to get the cobra policy. That would have been 1300.00. Couldn’t afford the 570 a month how could we afford 1300.00? Well just trying to get by……We need the extention! Not lazy folks! Just unlucky! Thanks for your time Suzette M Shaw Omaha NE.
  • I exhausted all of my benefits 10 weeks ago. I have tried unsuccessfully each day to find employment, my electricity is cut off and my landlord wants his rent in 10 days no exceptions I am a college graduate with an advanced degree, so are both my parents and my spouse we arel all unemployed so I have no resources. this bipartisan bickering has got to end because at the end of the day the American people lose.
  • There isn’t much hope for job recovery so why don’t they pass another extension for people who have exhausted all of their benefits.  All I keep hearing especially from our President and reading, is that there will be no jobs generated until late 2010 or 2011.  This is not expectable by any means.
The President is going to MIT tomorrow to make a speech about renewable energy. While he’s there why doesn’t he ask them if he gave them some stimulus money for research and development projects like renewable energy, stem labs across America, protective full body uniforms for our soldiers, better weapons for our soldiers, Solar power energy for all our house in America, Wind energy. Could they start up companies and start hiring people for research and development for our future. The Labor Department said there was a net loss of 263,000 jobs in the month September, up from a revised loss of 201,000 jobs in August. This report is dismal and disappointing,” said Sung Won Sohn, economics professor at Cal State University Channel Islands. “The ‘green shoots’ in the economy are withering. Technically, the economy may have bottomed, but the job market doesn’t have any hope.
